Neurofeedback for a Healthier Mind
Enhancing focus, reducing stress, and restoring peace with gentle, effective brain training

What Is Neurofeedback?
According to EEGinfo.com, the brain’s core skill is self-regulation. As we develop, our brain learns to self-regulate through natural feedback by interaction with the world. Neurofeedback, or EEG (electroencephalography) biofeedback, is a way of providing unique neurophysiological information to a person and directly training the brain, allowing it to learn to function better and more efficiently.
Electrical signals from the brain, not usually available for viewing, are made available with the right equipment. We can now augment the process by allowing the brain to see itself in action through its own brainwave activity, from moment to moment, by way of EEG. This allows the brain to watch itself regulate in real time, like looking in a mirror, so that it can gradually improve its ability to become more competent in daily functioning. Because the learning takes place at the level of fast electrical signals, learning occurs gradually, almost effortlessly, so that even individuals with significant cognitive impairments can learn and change.
What Conditions Can Neurofeedback Help?
Since Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation, optimal brain function is necessary to improve quality of life. Self-regulation training improves the function of the central nervous system and thereby improves mental performance, emotional control and physiological stability. Training has been shown to improve functioning in various issues such as:
- Addictions
- Anxiety
- Attention
- Cognitive Abilities
- Concussion
- Coping
- Depression
- Emotional Regulation
- Headaches/Migraines
- Learning Challenges
- Mood Swings
- Motivation
- Peak Performance
- PMS symptoms
- PTSD
- Seizure
- Sleep quality and disturbances
- Stress Reactions
- Stroke
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Trauma Coping
Frequently Asked Questions
Who Can Benefit From Neurofeedback?
Any individual, of any age, and at any stage of life, can benefit from Neurofeedback training. Children who may have challenges with sleep, attention deficits, learning challenges, and other types of behaviors considered to be disrupting or disturbing to their social, emotional, and relational skills.
The adolescent stage of life is an especially challenging transition from childhood into adulthood, before the brain is fully developed and possesses executive functioning skills of proper decision making and introspection. Those who struggle with low-coping, anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, or substance abuse may find neurofeedback training to be very calming, motivating, and effective. Neurofeedback is helpful to maintain good brain health and cognitive functioning as we age, just as peak performers can benefit from having the enhanced cognitive edge to better themselves in creativity, sports, and business.
What Does a Neurofeedback Session Look Like?
You sit in a comfortable chair, in a private room with adjustable lighting and temperature for your sensory needs (no fragrances/perfumes please). EEG paste is used to attach sensors to your scalp, placed according to the areas of concern you have discussed with the practitioner. This whole process is painless and doesn’t involve any voltage or current into your brain.
A computer, by way of a highly advanced Neuro Amplifier, will read and process the brain waves. Specific information processed will be presented back to you through sounds and sights in the form of a video game on a TV. Your specific brainwaves will “play” the video game by simply watching the TV screen, as they work to self-correct what it sees and hears by shifting, altering, enhancing or diminishing the video game on the screen. Over time and repeat sessions, this process will reinforce the growth and strength of new neurons (and new behaviors or functioning), and diminish the less helpful pathways that were considered problematic. It’s literally a workout for your brain that builds strength and stamina by practicing repeat exercises.
Is Neurofeedback a cure?
In the case of organic brain disorders such a stroke or brain injury (dysregulation), neurofeedback is helping the healthy parts of the brain communicate and function better, by enhancing healthy neurons or allowing new ones to develop. In the case of disregulation, (not the same as dysregulation), this is the failure of the brain to properly coordinate in timing and frequency dynamics, but there is no real “disease” to be cured. The training is unique to each person, of sensor placement and specific training frequency, depending on the issues. Training self-regulation is likely the remedy to improved behavior and overall functioning. But again, the term “cure” would not apply.
How long does it take?
The first session requires approximately 90 minutes. Sessions beyond this will be completed in under 60 minutes, at a rate of 1 or 2 times a week. Typically, approximately 30 sessions (or more) are recommended to see significant, long-lasting results. After this, some clients may notice a need for an infrequent or occasional “tune up.”
Will my medical insurance cover the cost?
No, but a monthly superbill can be provided for you to submit to your individual insurance company. Some FSA/HSA accounts may be used to pay for services, please check with your own plan first.
Is this talk therapy?
No, talking is allowed but certainly not required in order for the training to work. Neurofeedback is commonly used when talk therapy has been exhausted and progress has been minimal, because many mental disregulations can be physiological in nature and in need of practices that can address timing, rhythm, and frequency synchrony.
What if I'm on medication?
Continue to take your doctor-prescribed medications as directed, and be sure to let your doctor know you are interested in or have begun neurofeedback training. Be sure to share with the practitioner if you are using non-prescribed drugs as well, as this may impact your training experience. As the neurofeedback training continues, it is common for clients to function and feel better, needing a change or decrease in medications previously being taken. You must work with your prescribing doctor to adjust medication slowly.
